6. Parachute Jump

When a parachutist dives out of an airplane, he hopes to meet a lot of air to reduce his rate of fall! Why?

Without air (resistance), his speed would increase due to the pulling force of the earth. If he fell a large distance, imagine the speed of his impact-ouch! Opening his parachute gives more air resistance because the chute "catches" more air than just his body alone. Air resistance gives an upward push opposite to the direction of his body and chute, causing him to slow down. The rate of his fall is decreased considerably by the air resistance.
